"Gabriel's Shelter"

Gabriel is very proud of his refuge. Created ingeniously with the available resources, with their hands, with the waste of others, imagination to find the right place, hurry when building it.

It is your reference site, what you missed so much. At the moment it is what it has, it knows where to shelter when it rains, where to sleep when it is exhausted, to rest, in short, in a safe place for him.

Hidden, few people pass by, and sheltered by the bushes, or infer their presence. Now you can drink and read calmly. Now you can dodge inquisitive glances, and be really alone when you want, which is almost always.

However, Gabriel dreams of a real home. A more solid roof, to start again a life where security and a real rest allow you to acquire drive and determination to work, earn your bread without resorting to begging, a place where the lock that determines your privacy is more consistent that a red sheet, threadbare, light.

Gabriel tells me that his refuge is a projection of something he desires with eagerness. That in the open is a non-living, and that staying in the street immediately sought a place to mount shelter. Gabriel was a janitor, Gabriel fell into the ruthless and merciless clutches of alcohol after the loss of employment. Gabriel wants to recover and for that he needs a home as a starting point.

The story of Gabriel is also my story, and it can be that of any other person who suffers a moment of weakness and vulnerability in his life.

"The Shelter of Manolo"

I wanted to take this picture in the light of day, to distance myself from the drama of the situation of the homeless. I have chosen the color and chromatic variety in this and other photographs of the same theme, precisely to accentuate this distancing to maintain a certain objectivity on the subject.

The defeat that supposes the situation narrated causes that many indigents sleep or they dwell during almost all the day in their shelter, especially the weekends when it comes to cashiers as it is the case. There they are not to think, for lack of strength, expectations, illusion. It has not been unfortunately, much less difficult the search, these scenes are more familiar than ever in the current times and are absolutely normalized, which does not say much about a state of law that for absolute bullshit observes the constitution as an intraspable border and who forgets that that same constitution assures every citizen a decent home.

In this case it is about Manolo. A guy who reads a lot, he loves Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Chekhov, in short, Russian literature, like me, that's why I empathize so much. Because of that and because like him, I also slept in a cashier. It is not about lack of skills, or intelligence, or even willpower. Finishing on the street is not about that. It can happen to anyone, anyone who, as in the case of Manolo, suffers a divorce so painful that it ends up discarding itself and abandoning itself without remedy. When he realizes, he is like this, and he wishes it was not too late to react.

"The Shelter of Alex and Marta"

Some people consider the bed the best invention in the world. Well, I think they happen.

But it is essential even in the flat, with cold, sharing it with a beer, talking about the human and the spiritual, without talking about pain and scarcely any hope.

Even so there is that inherent dignity to the human being, a mattress in front of the social security, in a symbolic way, that, although it appeals to those who have gone through similar situations, it gladdens the view by its aesthetic and colorful.

But the story of this photo is not about color and aesthetics, shapes and beauty.

Alex and Marta would like to create a family, in a home, give up alcohol as a form of escape and smile more. Feeling protected, not suffering verbal aggressions and ignominiously tolerating how to look for life every day.

They have stung many doors and there is no satisfactory answer. They make crafts, he was a warehouse worker, she looked after the elderly. After an eviction, everything went to hell. The spiral into which they entered, of debt and mimetic depression, ended in this, life on the street and alcoholism. They want to heal and remedy all their pains. For this they require many resources that they do not have now. Entering a hospital and then returning to the street is not a remedy.

The story of Alex and Marta was also mine, and it can happen again, because I am in the wire of precarious and symbolically paid work. If you want to help Alex and Marta, and therefore myself, you can make a donation to the account that signs the article with the name "Cobijos".
